London is an exciting, vibrant and often noisy city but this busy metropolis also has a quiet side. Siobhan Wall encourages Londoners and visitors to the capital to wander away from the crowds and discover calm amid the hustle and bustle.
This is a guide to over 100 quiet places to enjoy the art and culture that London has on offer, from small museums and light-filled galleries to hushed libraries, characterful bookshops and places to find beautifully designed, handcrafted objects.
With evocative photographs and a short description for each location, including travel, access and contact details, Quiet London: Culture reveals hidden, tranquil places in one of the world's liveliest cities.

There is peace and quiet to be found in bustling cities, and Wall (Quiet Paris; Quiet New York) has tracked it down. These two "Quiet London" books focus on food and drink and culture, all located in venues with no background music. Quiet London: Food & Drink lists restaurants, cafes, food markets, and even pubs, where a mellow atmosphere can be enjoyed. Quiet London: Culture will guide harried visitors to peaceful galleries, museums, libraries, shops, and bookshops. Listings offer addresses and hours, public transportation options, accessibility, and a short description, accompanied by attractive photos. A helpful index is organized by location. Many of the quiet spots are off the beaten path and would be delightful gems to visit. Wall has located artisans offering extraordinary handmade items and features new and varied cafes, where a lunch can feature an eel pie or lentil and coconut dhal. VERDICT Appealing additions to general London travel guides, these small books can fit in a pocket and will be appreciated by both seasoned travelers and those on their first visit to London.--Melissa Stearns, Franklin Pierce Univ.
